Meet the Parents: The Fu-Mu (父母) Edition

I’ve said this numerous times, but Brett’s blog from Beijing is one of the THE best and most consistently interesting windows in to the wacky world of Zhongguo. If you haven’t been there recently, you must check out his photo of a Qingdao beach during the beer festival.

His most recent post is a link to a blog by an American married to a Chinese who had the privilege to accompany his in-laws on their first trip to the US.

Now I have yet to take the in-laws to the US. Many of these things he’s described I just couldn’t see them doing. They haven’t traveled much but they are nice city-folk without a 土 bone in their body who are very polite and easy-going. That said, we have accompanied Americans in China and I can certainly sympathize with this post. It’s never easy when you are responsible for being the sole conduit of an alien culture for people with whom you are traveling. The author, 88, handled it with a good deal of warmth, patience, and a great sense of humor.

If that’s not enough, check out 88’s link to a guide on finding the cleanest bathrooms in China. I’m thinking of prining this out and having it tatooed onto my body so as to never leave home without it.

Thanks Jeremy, glad you’re doing well. And yes, when not saving the world from S.P.E.C.T.R.E., he’s hanging in Cambridge.
