I can't count the number of times on the subway in Beijing that I'm reading the 北京晚报 or some such rag and somebody comes up to me and asks me if I can read Chinese. Kind of like watching a new college freshman get pinched for "Bicycling While Intoxicated,"* it would be funny if it just weren't so sad.<br /><br />*An actual offense in this town.
