Blogger/Blogspot blocked?

October 25th, 2006 · 6 Comments

A report from TMH (The Mighty Ho) out of Shanghai that as of this evening, blogger and blogspot are being blocked by the Great (Fire) Wall of China. Hopefully it’s a temporary setback. Curse you Chinabounder! You maniac! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God…damn you all to hell!” (Insert your own pathetic Charlton Heston imitation here.)

If you can read this, but you can’t get on the site (yes, I know I sound like the phone company–if you’re phone is out, please call…), the service PK Blogs will allow you to see the whole site again.

    This is not new. Blogger/blogpsot and a few others have been blocked for some time. But they are accessible through the usual proxies and circumvention devices. I (coincidentally also a historian of China from a large public university in Northern California) have been reading you regularly from my apt. in Beijing. 加油!

    加油 indeed. To make a small correction anonymous - Blogspot/Blogger blogs were unblocked for a good while (for the life of me I can’t remember when it was… 3 months ago?). Of course, how would one know this if they always checked the blogs via a proxy :-)

    J., I was gutted about not being able to visit your blog, as you usually put a lot of formatting into your long posts that really helps break up the text for us non-historians that just dig Chinese history… cheers for the PK Blogs link.

    Interestingly enough - the comments page seems to work sans proxy.

    Well, I’m visiting your site right now from Xinjiang and I’m not using a proxy. So, I guess it’s not blocked at the moment.

    Not sure what’s going on here, looks like the site might be back up in some parts of China. I know that Chris, Ryan, and a few others posted on this last night.

    Hopefully whatever happened, it’s over now.

    @Michael,

    Thanks for the update. How’s life out west?

    This is interesting. I have been in Beijing off and on for the better part of 18 months. From day one I have had trouble getting to blogspot and have had to use proxies. First I was on Qinghua’s campus, and more recently in an apartment near Chaoyangmen across town. Since I got in the habit of using proxies for certain sites, it may well have been unblocked sometime in the middle there and I would not have noticed. However, I can confirm that 花崗齋雜記 is blocked this very moment. All i need to do is toggle my proxy on and off to check.

    I remember reading that wikipedia was recently unblocked. Yet, I still can’t get to it without a proxy. Others I know can.

    I wonder if this is happening at the ISP (or even more local) level?

    Looks like there may be some spots where the site can be seen, but from the reports I’m seeing (Danwei, TPD, Life in Suzhou, etc.) it would seem that blogspot is back on “The List.”

    Damn.

    Back to using pkblogs.com and proxy servers.
