I was lucky enough to be tagged by a meme from a fellow PhD student also residing here in Beijing. She writes the blog Yogademia and frankly I’m damn impressed. I can pull a muscle just tying my shoes, she’s trying “side crane #482 with a half-twist” or something. Kudos+ and thanks for the tip on how to make better Sangrias…they’re always key to beating back the Beijing summer.
The meme is eight things that are interesting/unique/unknown about me. I did a list of five things back in December, but here goes for eight more items:
1) I hate pidan toufu 皮蛋豆腐. And hate is not too strong a word. Can’t even smell it. The only thing that makes me retch quicker is Doritos. Go figure.
2) I’m into fresh flowers. I love having them around the house. But before you mock me keep in mind…
3) I played rugby for 13 years. Mostly as a forward. Go ahead, make a lilac joke.
4) Most people know that being from New England, I’m a huge Red Sox fan but my loyalties do not necessarily stop at the water’s edge. I also count Arsenal as one of my favorite sports teams.
5) We own/timeshare a hamster named Pang-pang (胖胖).
6) Yes, I’m ashamed to say that it was me who came up with that name.
7) My new favorite place to study in Beijing has to be Candy Floss, a little courtyard cafe tucked in between Jiaodaokou and Nanlugoxiang.
All time desert island albums in no particular order: Tori Amos–Little Earthquakes, Keith Jarrett–The Koln Concerts, Led Zeppelin IV, Beatles–Abbey Road, Bill Evans–Waltz for Debbie, and Miles Davis–Kind of Blue. (Runner-up: Frank Sinatra–Only the Lonely.)
9) Bonus item since I used the rugby one last time: I’ve played piano since I was five.
Okay…I’d rather not ‘re-tag’ the same people as last time, so I’ll have to cut my list from 8 to a more manageable number. How about Froog, Nels, Kate, and Rachel?

Mmmm, Candyfloss is nice, though I remember coming away with not an insignificant number of mosquito bites the one time I went…

OK, you got me.
I don’t really approve of this tagging business…. but I’ve been a good sport.

One of my all time favorites.

Leah,
Yeah, the wildlife at Candyfloss is one of the reasons I like it. I had baby praying mantids crawling all over my table and every 10 minutes a giant wasp would do a MiG impression and swoop a caterpillar out of a nearby tree. After that, YJ made use of one of the many inside nooks for reading. But it’s funky in a “run-down don’t-step-on-a-nail B&B kind of way.”

Just found this on Bill Evans. Nice piece. Had no idea he eventually got co-composer credit on Flamenco Sketches.

Candyfloss definitely is nice, though the people who run it don’t really seem to know what they’re doing. Or didn’t the last time I was there, at least. Still — the lucky bastards actually own the courtyard, which I suppose means that they’re not under any financial pressure to sell spaces.
I haven’t been there in about a year and a half, but one of the highlights - speaking of ‘wildlife’ - was checking out all the eye-candy from 中戏 that went there. One of the lowlights: having to listen to their conversations.
