If so, the perhaps the original translators are following the reading that the pursuit of happiness refers primarily to the pursuit of private economic interests, especially private property. Could the original translators have been working with knowledge of the context (Locke, Smith etc) of Jefferson's formulation? <br/><br/>Was <i>xingfu</i> coined to serve as a place marker for the Aristotelean concept of happiness ? If so, this translation may serve contemporary American understandings of the pursuit of happiness better than <i>liyi</i> does. I wonder which understanding serves China better these day.
