Mixed-race relationships and incredibly cheesy advertising.

And we wonder why inter-cultural marriages between foreign men and Chinese women still are the subject of so many bizarre stereotypes and cliches.  This was an image I pulled off an actual advertisement running on Danwei of all places….I almost thought it was a gag ad but it appears that no, this company is completely serious.  Yellow Fever? 白血病?  Can we move past this crap in 2009?

And no...the link is NOT active.

  • Hehe, I wrote about that advert a while ago, in the context of what contextually and demographically-targeted ads say about the people that see them :)

It’s nice to see that Dilbert has finally found a woman, though…

  • Could be worse: my GMail text ads occasionally serve up links to Beijing ‘massage’ agencies. Oh, Google, what do you think of me?

My favorite unpleasant term for a Chinese girl who exclusively dates Westerners is 扛洋枪. Haven’t heard it in a while and it’s probably out of date now, but you just can’t beat it for sheer nastiness and atavistic penis-size fetishism.

@brendan : I get the massage ads from adsense all the time too (as everyone from china ?), and I click on them !
the site are incredibely bad and cheesy so you’re in for a free laugh :) , and they pay as you click, so maybe somedays they’ll move over when they notice it’s not worth it … ohh hope..

I do find it interesting that while the man is not very attractive, neither is the woman. Sort of reducing expectations, but increasing perceptions of reality.

At least this bloke’s giving us a stellar reputation: http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=gz-TUzjSXOw

  • I’ve seen this advert before, and as dumb as it is you have to admit that they know their audience.

Overweight, middle-aged, caucasian male holding a thin, gorgeous Chinese model. That’s the dream of many a man who fit that description and think that teaching English here in China is their ticket to wedding bliss. Now you can avoid the hassle of moving here for a year and just order online!

  • At first glance I gnashed my teeth and went grr! in a very non-lotus blossom way. That thick, furry arm, the lardy leer … Ugh! Then I realised what that half-wit ad with tosser appeal is doing here.

    Yes, I totally agree, Jeremiah.

Alex, horses for courses, but I don’t understand why you say the Chinese model is unattractive.

  • Almost as cringeworthy as those ads I used to see of obese childless American couples in their 50′s wheeling newly acquired daughters around the parks of Beijing.

So what? There are plenty of these ads for Russian women as well. Men have money, they want an attractive “trophy” woman. Some fantasize about Asians, some East Europeans…
No one makes a big deal about the “stereotypes and cliches” of the marriages of American men and Russian women? Why?

” Overweight, middle-aged, caucasian male holding a thin, gorgeous Chinese model.”

“That thick, furry arm, the lardy leer…”

“Almost as cringeworthy as those ads I used to see of obese childless American couples in their 50’s wheeling newly acquired daughters around the parks of Beijing.”

I am so sick of foolish, self-hating whites in the Sinology field. Oh look, I can put “my kind” down and earn brownie points with my Chinese compadres! The worst are those foreign idiots in China who complain about the white tourists, as if their “China experience” is befouled by seeing too many people just like themselves (hate to break it to you dude, but you also are…)

  • David,

Easy there, sparky…this is a tongue-in-cheek post about a funny and not particularly tasteful advertisement, not a call to arms. Put the shovel down.

  • “I am so sick of foolish, self-hating whites in the Sinology field. Oh look, I can put “my kind” down and earn brownie points with my Chinese compadres!”

Wow!! Two sentences, three assumptions, five misconceptions, half a dozen knee-jerks, and a sprinkling of venom.

One should never go cold turkey on the Sino experience, David; you’ll just end up scaring the panda-huggers.

Har, so now I’m a self-hating white. Maybe I’m a white guy as well, David. Or is that just a deep sexy growl?

  • We just had someone stop by our comments section and dump some links to websites devoted to “female internet romance scammers from Asia” – apparently the site that placed the ad in question has not been satisfying its users. Link and link.

  • Joel,

Just so you think I wasn’t singling out Danwei, I think these ads infect a lot of sites…basically anything with “Asia” which says more about the way Google works then the sites themselves.

I must say though that it was a little jarring to see such an ungainly picture dominating your home page.

I can imagine the couple featured in that advertisement together on a beach somewhere… his hand reaching for her bikini bottom… just like Zhang Ziyi and her European vacation!

  • We’re putting about one of these URLs a week into our ad filter these days.

    Also, this is apropos.
